Cacao absolute is extracted from the bean or pod of the cacao tree, botanically known as Theobroma cacao,which comes from Sterculiaceae family.

Physical properties

It is dark brown in color with a deep chocolate liqueur aroma.

Origin

Theobroma cacao is native to the Americas. In pre-Columbian Mesomarica, the cacao tree was considered an important commodity.

How to extract

The oil that is extracted from cacao beans is cacao absolute, which is not an essential oil. The oil is obtained by a process of alcohol extraction from a concrete. To obtain the concrete, a hydrocarbon solvent is used to extract oil from the plant. An absolute does not contain 100% natural ingredients.

Chemical composition

Antioxidants: Cacao absolute is packed full of antioxidants that help protect body cells, collagen as also elastin from any damage that results from free radicals.

Flavonols: Chocolate essential oil is used as an aphrodisiac because of the presence of flavonols, the active constituent of cacao.

Precautions

Even though chocolate essential oil is nontoxic, it is in concentrated form, and should be used only after diluting it with a carrier oil.

Those who have a sensitive skin may notice irritation in some cases.

Benefits

• Owing to its antioxidant properties, cacao absolute protects the body cells and keeps the skin young and healthy. It also aids sluggish circulation, thus promoting softer skin. Thus, it is added to skin care products such as lotions, facial masks, body lotions and treatments.
• The chocolate aroma is also said to have positive aphrodisiac effects, and it is used in many of the erotic formulations.
• It is also used as an ingredient in massage oils, diffusers, potpourri, body fragrances, perfume oil, aromatherapy and bath oils as means to reduce anxiety and stress.
• The oil also finds use in bakery products.

Therapeutic Applications

As mentioned above,cacao absolute is used as natural means to improve the health of the skin. Additionally, it is used to decrease depression, increase overall health, lessen stress, and improve sexual performance.

Blends well with

Cacao absolute oil blends well with essential oils of vanilla, peppermint, rose, cinnamon, nutmeg, tuberose, tangerine, wild orange, bergamot, and coffee.
