The noticeable and distinguishing factors between reiki and the massage therapy are as follows:
- A massage is fundamentally a physical therapy that involves stroking and manipulating of the muscles and joints with the use of hands. Reiki generally does not involve touch. It works on the energy channels in the specific areas of the body to relieve blockages that cause stress and illness.
- Reiki is performed with the recipient fully clothed and no oils or lotions are required. Massage therapy can be with or without clothes and a variety of oils and creams may or may not be used.
- Massage may be uncomfortable or in some cases dangerous for people suffering from medical conditions such as cancer and heart ailments. Reiki therapy is safe for people with any medical condition as it requires no touch or very little touch.
Nevertheless, it is always best to check with a doctor before opting for alternative treatments. - A licensed massage therapist is usually trained from a recognized massage school and is well-versed with physiology, anatomy and various massage techniques. Reiki is not licensed or recognized by any board.
- Reiki is a holistic therapy; it touches all the functions of the human body at the physical, emotional, spiritual or mental level. Massage on the other hand works mainly on physical and emotional levels of an individual.
Reiki can be performed on a recipient from a distance, while massage requires the physical presence.
