Yoga For Vertigo

You experience vertigo when you feel dizzy and you feel like you are in a spinning motion. Any imbalance in your spinal cord or brain may result in this feeling of light headedness. Yoga for vertigo will benefit you as it helps you regain your balance and stability. The rejuvenation of your internal organs and muscles as well as the added flow of blood throughout your body helps you regain your balance faster.

Treating vertigo begins with the identification of the cause for your imbalance. Meanwhile, you may be prescribed vestibular suppressants and antiemetic medication to prevent you toppling over or throwing up. Yet, all these cures for vertigo do have their side effects as they can be too strong on your body.

Yoga poses for vertigo help you lead a normal life and eliminates the harmful effects of any medication. Sarvangasana (Shoulder Stand) and Shirshasana (Head Stand) increase the blood supply to the upper part of your body. The increased oxygen level and nutrients aid your body to heal faster. The nerves of your body get stimulated through these yoga poses and bring your body back to balance. Breathing techniques can also calm you and allay the dizziness caused by vertigo.

Are There Particular Poses That You Can’t Do Because Of Vertigo Problem?

Yoga is known to be very helpful for treating vertigo. This is because it improves the blood supply throughout your body and your nerves are also stimulated. When you suffer from vertigo, the most difficult position is to stand up or move into another position quickly. Though the yoga poses like Malasana (Garland Pose), Sarvangasana (Shoulder Stand) and Shirshasana (Head Stand) improve the nerve stimuli to your brain and spinal cord, there are certain yoga poses to avoid in vertigo. Avoid the poses that require you to bend forward or face downward for some time. Adho Mukha Svanasana (Downward Facing Dog Pose) is a yoga pose that you should avoid if you have vertigo. Pranayama or breathing techniques are helpful to regain your balance. Hence, adhere to poses that require only gentle movements and no sudden changes.

Positional vertigo treatment in yoga is done through practicing the Malasana (Garland Pose). Squat or get down on your haunches. Keep your back straight, bending forward to achieve this. Bring the palms of your hand to a reverent pose like in prayer. Your shoulders should be relaxed. Continue in this pose for a while, and then gradually straighten your legs and stand up. Try to keep your heels pressed against the ground when you practice this pose. This pose is known to be helpful in the treatment of positional vertigo.
