The thyroid gland is responsible for the production of thyroxin but when this hormone is insufficient or produced in very little quantities it causes a problem in the body’s metabolism and this condition is called as hypothyroidism. The thyroid gland, which is a part of the endocrine system, helps to regulate the metabolism in our body. A person suffering from hypothyroidism does not have healthy metabolism and that affects the entire body. Yoga is know to have beneficial effects on the endocrine system and thus helps in the optimum function of this system. Yoga asanas or poses help to gently massage our internal organs and put pressure on certain internal organs in a controlled and systematic way. This helps in better flow of blood and oxygen to each and every part of the body; it also clears the blockages and helps in nourishing the organs with fresh blood and oxygen. You would need to check with the doctor to see if any thyroxin hormone supplements are needed.

Yoga asanas or poses help greatly in keep in the endocrine system healthy and that helps to keep your thyroid in a normal state. Start with Dhyana or meditation daily before you practice any yoga asanas or poses. Use some music that is specially meant for meditation or if you can then go and meditate in an open place like a park or a beach early in the morning. This will have added benefits as will increase the fresh oxygen intake and the early morning environment will make you feel more energized and calm at the same time. Once you are done with meditation you can move on to Pranayama or the different breathing techniques as this will help to harmonize and correct your breathing. Then move on to yoga asanas or poses, the ones listed below are considered beneficial for hypothyroidism:

  • Anulom Vilom or alternate nostril breathing helps to harmonize your breathing pattern and correct breathing helps to cure most of the ailments.
  • Kapalbhati or the breath of fire is used to cleanse your lungs and breathing tract.
  • Ujjayi or loud breathing helps to make your nervous system strong.
  • Sarvangasana or the shoulder stand is an inverted asana or pose and increases the blood flow in the upper body.
  • Shavasana or the corpse pose fully relaxes your body and stimulates blood circulation.
  • Simhasana or the lion posture helps to stimulate the throat and also benefits your tongue, jaw, and mouth.
