Thunderbolt Pose - Vajrasana

Vajrasana is also known as thunderbolt pose. It stretches the thighs, knees, ankles and feet. It improves the seated posture. This is one of the safer postures for people with back problems.

It can be a great alternative to Padmasana and hence can be used in meditation. You can kneel on a folded blanket for this pose. Do not do this pose if you have hurt your ankles or knees. Curling the toes to rest the balls of the feet on the floor will help.

  1. Kneel down on the floor with knees hip width apart and the top of the feet flat on the floor
  2. Exhale when you sit back on your heels
  3. Keep your hands on the top of your thighs, close to knees and palms facing down
  4. Relax the shoulders and upper body but spine should be erect and tall
  5. Point the crown of the head to the ceiling and look straight ahead
  6. Remain in this pose from 30 seconds upto a minutet Shake your legs to relieve the knees, ankles and feet
