An infection in the thyroid gland may be referred to as subacute thyroiditis. It results in the inflammation and swelling of the thyroid gland. This usually occurs after an infection of the upper respiratory tract. Conditions such as influenza and mumps may be the triggers for this condition. Subacute thyroiditis is believed to be caused due to a viral infection. This condition generally develops in middle-aged women. The first sign of the condition is pain experienced in the neck. The pain may also extend to the jaw areas and also the ears. There may also be discomfort in swallowing, fever, tiredness, soreness in the throat, tenderness and pain in the thyroid gland and a general weakness in the body. This condition causes imbalances in the functioning of the thyroid gland. An excessive production of the thyroid hormone is a condition called hyperthyroidism and may cause diarrhea, sweating, loss of weight, tremors and increased sensitivity to heat. Reduced production of the thyroid hormone is a condition called hypothyroidism and many lead to symptoms such as constipation, fatigue and increased sensitivity to cold.

Hypothyroidism can be combated with the help of Siberian ginseng. Application of primrose oil also serves to stimulate the thyroid gland and is thus beneficial in treating disorders of the thyroid gland. Vitamin A is essential for encouraging healthy functioning of the thyroid gland. It is useful to structure your diet in such a way that it includes green leafy vegetables, carrots and eggs. It is also important to restrict your intake of foods such as biscuits, cakes and sweets. Alcohol must also be avoided. Foods rich in vitamin B12 are helpful in preventing hypothyroidism.
