A lip infection can be caused by various agents. It might be the result of some trauma on the lip or some allergic reaction to a particular irritant. There may be lip blisters or boils that develop on the surface of the lip. Some allergic infections on the lip can be the result of make up like lipstick or powder. Either that particular brand may not agree with one’s skin or make up in general may not agree with the lip. Lips are delicate and sensitive to external agents. Allergies on the lip are not known to be infectious. Sometimes an infection that shows up on a person’s lip might actually be the result of a stomach infection that is manifesting itself on a person’s lip. Visit a doctor to be sure what the basis of the infection is.
At times recurrent trauma to one’s lips like wearing of braces or too much of biting down on the lip can lead to an infection occurring. Many people bite on their lips without even being aware of doing so. Like when they are sleeping. Then in these cases the need is to stop biting the lips or allowing the braces to cause damage to one’s lips. Check with the dentist on what can be done in these situations. To prevent biting down on your lip try applying some ointment or cream that has a bad taste. This will prevent one from chewing on the lips. But care has to be taken that the cream or gel applied is not the type that when ingested will result in a stomach infection. Hence the cream that is applied should be edible. Try putting some edible oils over the lips. You can apply bitter gourd on the lips or olive oil.
It is helpful to avoid eating any kind of spicy food for about a week or so. This can also reduce the infection. Drink plenty of fluids and water regularly. Try to avoid tobacco and cigarette smoking too. Also consumption of alcohol should be totally avoided or reduced vastly as these items can cause the lip area to get more irritated and the infection to prolong. Good oral hygiene is also a pre requisite. Brushing ones teeth twice daily and flossing can prevent any bacteria from accumulating in one’s mouth. Try rinsing out the mouth with an anti- bacterial solution for best results. Visit a doctor for other medical recommendations.
