Yoga For The Little Ones

Children love activity. Yoga is one way of engaging them in physical activity which will help them in their physical as well as mental growth. With yoga children understand better how their body works. They learn quickly to dedicate themselves to the tasks in hand. They also gain coping and concentration skills. In turn, they become confident.

Yoga helps students to unwind. It calms their nerves, gives peace of mind especially during exams as well as gives clarity of thought and ability to focus. One has to be careful about the yoga poses that can be taught to young children, especially for children below eight years as their bones and muscles are still growing.

The yoga moves which will help children to concentrate on studies are –

  • Padmasana (Lotus Pose) - This is a great calming pose. It also develops physical and mental stability.
  • Adho Mukha Svanasana (Downward Facing Dog Pose)- This yoga pose improves memory, concentration, intellect and creativity.
  • Uttanasana (Standing Forward Bend)- Standing forward bend rejuvenates mind and improves concentration.
  • Parvatasana (The Mountain Pose)- The Mountain pose is extremely useful for attaining the power of concentration. It is also restorative to breathe and remain in this position.
  • Prasarita Padottanasana (Wide Legs Stretching Pose)- This yoga pose also improves memory and concentration.
  • Vrksasana (The Tree Pose)- The Tree pose is a great concentration pose for children as they try to maintain balance.
  • Garudhasana (The Eagle Pose)- The Eagle pose is good for concentration and focus. Since it is one of the difficult poses, the children can either do the legs or the arms till they are comfortable doing both.
  • Setu Asana (Bridge Pose)- This yoga pose also calms the mind and enhances memory and concentration. The Bridge Pose gives vim, vigor and vitality to the body.
  • Sarvangasana (The Shoulder-Stand Pose) And Sirshasana (The Head-Stand Pose)- These two yoga poses also improve balance, concentration, confidence and will power.
  • Shavasana (The Corpse Pose)- It gives good sleep.

All the above yoga poses are effective for concentration and memory. The children may practice those yoga poses which suit their age and capability without causing any physical strain. Practicing yoga from a young age with a few simple postures will create an aptitude for the difficult ones later. Also starting them from young age ensures perfect health, immunity from illness and long life.

In conjunction with yoga postures, pranayama or rhythmic breathing technique is a must for the young children.Kapalbhati (The Cleansing Breath), Anuloma-Viloma (Alternate breathing) and Bhamri keep children energetic and focused. The breathing technique controls the mind and improves memory.
