Traditional wisdom dictates that we should eat breakfast within an hour of waking up. This ensures that the body does not go into starvation mode and the metabolism is revved into working condition for the day ahead. However, a slew of recent studies indicate that working out before breakfast may be the best way to lose those extra pounds.
There is no denying that breakfast is still the most important meal of the day. However, when you have your breakfast may determine whether your efforts at weight loss are successful or not. Experts now believe that exercising on an empty stomach first thing in the morning induces a greater percentage of fat burn and may even reduce the effects of a poor diet for the rest of the day and prevent insulin resistance. In a comparative study between groups of people who ate breakfast and exercised, who exercised on an empty stomach and who didn’t exercise at all; the group with the highest amount of weight lost was the one who exercised before breakfast.
However, if you do have a problem working out on a completely empty stomach and feel dizzy or nausea, this approach to exercise may not be suitable for you. A light meal or a snack of fruit before a heavy morning workout may help tackle the problem. At the end of the day, listen to your body and make the necessary changes that provide you with the best results.
