Mastitis is an infection of the breast tissue which can cause inflammation and swelling in the breast. This infection can cause pain, swelling, tenderness, itching especially on the nipples, and discharge from the nipples, with occasional pus.
This infection can be caused by bacteria and is commonly found in women who breastfeed. The enlarged milk ducts usually press against the fatty tissue in the breast leading to mastitis. Treatment is usually a course of antibiotics and hot compresses. Breastfeeding mothers are encouraged to continue feeding via a breast pump.
Mastitis also has flu-like symptoms which can make exercising difficult. The pain and discomfort in breasts also makes exercising uncomfortable. If you are comfortable with mastitis while it heals, you can exercise. It would make sense to take it easy even if you do exercise. Exercises that target your chest or back muscles can be avoided as it could lead to further plugged milk ducts aggravating the mastitis infection.
Some mothers go back to their active lifestyles while others take their time. You should find your own comfort level so that you can decide whether exercising through mastitis makes sense to you. Wearing correct nursing clothes also can make a difference. Tight or uncomfortable bras are a no-no, especially sports bras. There have been instances of exercise leading to mastitis.
