Why do I feel chest pain when I am doing yoga? Regards Teen Lee

Chest pain can occur from anywhere between the upper regions of the abdomen and the neck. It can also happen along with disorders that are mild or life threatening. Performing yoga for chest pain can be effective as it brings relief to conditions like chest congestion and enables the chest to open up. Some of the yoga for chest pain asanas are as follows. The Suptabaddha Konasana (Reclining Bound Angle Pose) is an effective yoga posture for chest pain. To perform this pose you will need a bolster. You should sit on the ground and keep the bolster in line with your spine. Keep your knees bent and legs bowed out to the sides and let your soles come together. Lie back with your head, upper and lower back being supported by the bolster. Keep your hands to your sides with your elbows and forearms against the ground and palms kept up. You can remain in this position for 5 to 20 minutes. This yoga posture for chest pain will help make it easier to breathe by opening up the chest. Sometimes, you may experience chest pain in Kundalini Yoga as the tension and suffocation in the chest muscles are being flushed out while performing the asanas.
Yoga exercises for arthritis pain relief can also be performed; however, you need to keep the following three things in mind. You should practice the yoga exercises for arthritis regularly, follow a proper diet, and avoid activities that put a strain on the nerves. Some of the effective yoga exercises for arthritis are Santulanasana (Balance Pose), Trikonasana (Triangle Pose), Veerasana (Hero Pose), Gomukhasana (Cow Face Pose), and Vrikshasana (Tree Pose). These yoga postures reduce rigidity in the joints and improve the flexibility of the muscles and joints. They also help improve blood circulation, bringing it to a normal level in the areas that are affected by arthritis. Lastly, these asanas helps in toning the muscles, and practicing these asanas has a soothing effect on the nervous system.
Sometimes performing exercises like jogging, walking and running for fitness, chest pain may be experienced. When this occurs make sure to consult a doctor as soon as possible. This could be due to insufficient blood flowing through the coronary arteries while performing the exercises. If the cause is heartburn, you can perform certain yoga asanas to bring relief. Yoga for heart burn includes Sukhasana (Easy Pose), Bidalasana (Cat pose), Adho Mukha Shvanasana (Downward Facing Dog Pose), and Ardha Matsyendrasana (Half Spinal Twist Pose). In order for yoga for chest pain to be effective, you need to combine these yoga postures along with a yogic diet that consists of a purely vegetarian diet to enhance the benefits.

Question on Yoga

Yoga for beginners or for novices, who are attempting advanced yoga asanas or postures for the first time, must always have an instructor to keep a tab on the type of postures being done. Moreover certain forms of yoga such as the Kundalini Yoga involve the activation of serious energies in the body and can lead to pains if not done in the right manner. Yoga must always be introduced slowly and gradually till the individual is comfortable in going ahead with advanced postures. Most importantly Yoga is a form of relaxation so any type of yoga that causes discomfort must be discontinued at once to prevent further complications. Also it would be advisable if you could check for underlying conditions that need to be ascertained by your physician. Let your doctor know that you are doing yoga if you are experiencing chest pains as it can indicate serious problems.

It is also possible that regurgitations of stomach acid during certain asanas give off the same kind of discomfort that is similar to chest pains. It is probably likely that it could be an incident of stomach acids coming to the surface. Whatever may be the reason, chest pains need to be inspected by a medical physician, please consult your doctor for further tests to actually determine the cause of chest pains during yoga.
