(January 23, 2009)

Please give me a list of asanas and pranayamas in a 'sequence'(which asana or pranayama has to done after one) which is helpful in increasing weight. My height is 5.7 and weight is 49 Kg.

It is a wonderful decision that you have made by choosing yoga to gain weight in a healthy manner. It will not only help you gain weight but will also help to tone your body in a beautiful way. You will experience an increase in your appetite after doing certain yoga asanas and when you eat the right foods that are fresh simple and healthy it will nourish your body and help you to gain weight.

Besides since yoga acts as a natural detox for your internal organs it deeply cleanses and optimizes the digestive and nervous functions so your body absorbs nutrients fully and in a better manner. But you need to take care and see to it that you only consume healthy food and stay away from processed refined unhealthy junk food. Also avoid overeating. Make sure you eat your meals at the same time daily. Eat in a pleasant and calm environment and pay attention to what you are eating. Feel the texture and taste of your food while you eat and make sure you chew your food well before you finally swallow it. This will ensure that your food gets digested properly and absorbed thoroughly by your body. Also make sure that you consume fresh sprouts, fruits, vegetables, curd, and buttermilk and also drink lots of water throughout the day. These will boost your immune system and keep your system clean and healthy. You can start your yoga practice daily with Dhyana or meditation, as it will increase your concentration and focus. Then move on to pranayama or breathing techniques as these will help you to harmonize your breathing pattern and will prepare your body for the yoga asanas or poses. You may then start with the practice of following asanas:

  • Shavasana Or The Corpse Pose – You may practice this asana or pose in between your asanas when you feel a little tired as it helps you to relax and also increases the blood circulation. Also practice this asana or pose in the end after you are done with the other asanas or poses.
  • Sirshasana Or The Headstand – This being an inverted asana or pose brings the blood rushing back in the opposite direction and relieves the tension from your lower body. This pose will boost your muscle strength and since it requires more energy to do this asana or pose your appetite will increase as well. You must consume healthy nutritious food to compensate for it.
  • Matsyasana Or The Fish Pose – This improves the digestion and helps to absorb the essential nutrients from your food in a better way.
