How to Create a Yoga Space in Your House?
Pick a quiet corner in your home and make it your meditation spot! Here are a few tips to help you get started.
The ancient art of Yoga is gaining a lot of popularity in the US and so it is hardly surprising to see so many Yoga studios come up at a fast pace. In case you are planning to take up this ancient practice, it is best that you sign up at one of these studios and learn Yoga under the guidance of a certified guru. In the beginning, perform all the exercises and postures in front of your trainer to minimize the risk of an injury. However, once you gain some level of mastery in Yoga, you can practice it at home too.
Creating a Yoga space at home is a great idea, as it allows you to relax, calm down and meditate at your own convenience. In case you share your place with parents, partners or kids, a tiny slice of private space may be more of a necessity than luxury. This does not mean that you have to convert an entire room into a mini Yoga studio. Just allocating a small, cozy, comfortable and peaceful (most important!) corner of any room for Yoga practice is more than enough. Given below are a few useful tips on how you can create and customize your yoga space at home.
- Choose wisely: When it comes to Yoga practice, the size of the room hardly matters. The place you choose should just give you enough space to stretch and lie down comfortably without bumping into anything. Also, make sure that other family members, especially pets have minimal or no access to your Yoga space.
- Keep it simple: Avoid placing too much furniture or elaborate art in your yoga space, as it could be distracting. Clean the area completely, to get rid of all the dust and dirt. Place a few yoga mats, cushions and candles, if required.
- Lighten up: An ideal Yoga space should let in an ample amount of natural sunlight during the day. If the light is too harsh, you can place a soft, sheer curtain over the window. Avoid placing any harsh lights or fluorescent lamps around. Brighten up the place with a candle light if required.
- Turn the heat on: It is very difficult to relax into a Yoga position when you are shivering and so an ideal Yoga studio or room should be on the warmer side. Like many people, if you prefer to wear light clothes while practicing the asana, a warmer room would be necessary.
- Mark your territory: Personalize your Yoga space in a way that allows you to relax and feel completely at home. You can also place items that appeal to your senses, such as candles, bells, gemstones and so on. If resources permit, paint the walls to a color that soothes you the most. If painting isn’t possible, hang sheets of the same color around your space. However, in such cases, make sure that you keep any candles far away.
- Freshen up: It is much easier to breathe naturally in a Yoga space that smells pleasant. As a result, you can stay focused on your technique and postures. Place incense, potpourri, essential oil and aromatherapy candles (preferably with a meditative scent) in the area that you choose.
- Add soothing sounds: Block out the noise of the busy city you live in, by playing some relaxing music or chants. If your Yoga space is already peaceful, you may want to leave a window open, just to enjoy the sound of nature. Several Yoga regulars place a set of chimes by an open window, or next to a table fan.
When it comes to creating a Yoga space, every individual has his or her own preference. Therefore, listen to your heart and be open to making changes, if that is what improves the effectiveness of your yoga sessions.
