Race walking is a type of athletic event. It is essentially a foot race, although it is different from running. In race walking, one foot must be in contact with the ground at all times. There are two rules to the race walking technique. Firstly, the supporting leg must be kept straight when the heel of the other foot touches the ground in front of the body. It must also stay straight during the vertical, which is the point when the foot passes beneath the body. Secondly, one foot must be on the ground at all times. In athletic events, these race walking rules are judged and a participant may be disqualified if there is a violation. An important point to note here is that keeping the leg straight does not mean locking the knee as this can cause damage to the bones and soft tissues. In race walking training, you will learn how to make contact with the ground with your front heel just as your rear toe is at the verge of leaving the ground. For an effective heel strike with the knee straight, you need to work on your shin strength. For a powerful push off, work on the calves. You need to rotate your hips forward and backward as you take every step. This movement must begin at the waist and not just from the top of the legs. The elbows should remain tucked in at your waist as they move. There is a tendency to lean slightly backwards while walking. This must be avoided. Balance your weight on the balls of the feet. Your waist and shoulders must remain relaxed for you to be able to walk efficiently. You can try boosting your speed for short periods of time during your walk. Then gradually increase the duration of these periods. With time and regular practice, you will be able to master the race walking technique.
