If you have a sliding hiatus hernia, then you should speak to your doctor about exercises that you can do; precautions that should take, and if yoga is advisable to treat the hernia. Consult an experienced yoga practitioner to understand the asanas that you can do and the ones that you should avoid. You must not do postures like the cobra pose, bent elbow spinal twist, hero posture and reclining bound angle pose when you have a hernia. Gathering information from every possible reliable source, about your condition, will make you better informed and therefore better equipped to cope with and deal with your condition.
Hiatus Hernia: In a general hernia, some organs push through the muscle wall that is there to keep it in place. Hiatus hernia happens when some part of the tummy pushes into the lower part of the chest, resulting from a problem in the diaphragm. The diaphragm is the muscle that separates the abdomen from the lungs and allows us to breathe. There are a few types of hiatus hernia:
Sliding Hiatus Hernia: This is a common hernia where the sphincter, which is at the bottom of the food pipe or esophagus and on top of the stomach, begins to push through a hiatus or a hole in the diaphragm. This is a small hernia.
Rolling Hiatus Hernia: This hernia is not so common. In this, some part of the stomach pushes through a hole in the diaphragm.
Hernia can make people prone to heartburn caused by reflux acid in the gullet.
Causes Of Hernia: Not everyone with a hernia has symptoms. It generally happens to people in their middle age and in the fifties. Hernia might happen because the diaphragm can become weak as one ages and this leads to protrusion of a part of the stomach. People who do exercises like weight lifting that put pressure on the abdomen, may be at a risk of developing a hernia. Obesity and coughing are other reasons of getting hernia.
Symptoms Of Hernia: People with hernia are more prone to reflux of acid in the gullet, which can inflame the lower part of the throat. Some of the common symptoms are:
- A burning sensation that rises from the lower chest or the upper abdomen to the neck. This is often confused as heartburn.
- A searing pain while swallowing hot beverages; belching; bloating; acidic taste in the mouth; a sick feeling; and, pain in the upper chest or abdomen, are common symptoms of hernia.
- There are other uncommon symptoms like a cough, wheezing, hoarseness, bad breath and severe chest pains.
Treatment: Do consult a doctor if you have any of these symptoms, instead of trying to treat yourself. A physician will recommend the correct medicines and may even suggest surgery, depending upon the condition.
