What is folliculitis?

When one or more hair follicles get inflamed, the condition is called Folliculitis. This condition may occur anywhere on the skin. It is a skin disorder when the hair follicles are infected and can also cause hair to grow inward. A mild form of Folliculitis can manifest itself as white pimples and can be embarrassing.

Causes

Folliculitis occurs when hair follicles are damaged due to friction from tight clothing, insect bites, blocked follicles, shaving, or braiding your hair too tightly and too close to the scalp. Most often Folliculitis is caused by the bacteria staphylococcus. Other causes can include iron deficiency, anemia, or an infection through the use of hot tubs that are not cleaned well before use. It can also appear as a barber’s itch caused by shaving. The symptoms include a rash, pimples, or pustules around the hair follicle, accompanied by itching skin. It can also spread through improper antibiotic treatment.

Home Remedies

One simple remedy to clear Folliculitis is to apply hot or cold compresses over the affected area. This will cure the rashes and also prevent it from spreading. To burst the boil and drain it you can add salt to hot water and use it for a compress. You can also wash the affected areas with salt mixed in warm water several times during the day.

You can try to boil some Neem (Margosa) leaves in water and the use the water in your bath to clear the infection. Neem is an excellent antiseptic and has anti-bacterial properties. You can also add some turmeric powder to the water.

You can exfoliate your skin by using sugar to get rid of the dead cells. Gently cleanse the infected area with antibacterial soap and apply some antibiotic cream with turmeric. To moisturize the skin you may use jojoba or olive oil.

You may avoid shaving irritated skin. Try using electric razor, rather than a blade and apply soothing aftershave lotion. Shave carefully to avoid cuts and bruises. If you are a woman try using alternate methods to remove hair.

Remember to clean your hot tub with chlorine regularly to avoid infection. Be careful while using commercial hot tubs. Do not share your towels, wash cloths, and bed sheets with others. Wash your towels and clothes in hot water and soap after every use.

Avoid scratching the infected area. Organisms that cause the infected can get embedded in your finger nails and can spread to other parts of the body or to other people. Also remember to wash your hands and fingernails often, if you are caring for someone with the infection. Avoid wearing tight clothes, especially jeans. Be sure your clothes do not abrade your skin. Wear comfortable, loose fitting clothes that let your skin breathe.
