Yoga Poses For Exam-Related Stress

Exam tension, stress and anxiety are only normal. Worrying about your exams is completely pointless as it only stresses you out and further inhibits your mental faculty. Furthermore, pondering over the fact you are worrying only increases your worries. This only adds to the problem without helping in any way.

Yoga is the best way, known to man, to de-stress without getting into distress situations. But, for optimum benefits you should start practicing Yoga as a way of life even before the onset of the exams and continue practicing all along, exam or no exam. Yoga is not like a fad diet that can be followed for a while, then discarded and again be picked up when needed. Exams are but a minor part of the stress syndrome. As you enter the working world you will come under a lot more stress and your choice of yoga will be rewarding.

Let’s start with exam tension during the exams. Start by doing deep breathing in the ration of 5 second inhalations to 10 seconds exhalations, 3 – 4 times a day at regular intervals. Just as many times, practise the Shavasana (Corpse Pose) for at least 10 minutes at a time. It may seem like a lot of time, but the results are so great that you will find yourself achieving a lot more by way of absorbing information in less time.

Another thing that adds to stress and tension is improper diet and this has been observed to be more during stressful situations like exams. Students tend to overeat unconsciously, particularly with fast foods and this only causes indigestion and stomach upsets. Remember, the more toxins in your body the more stress you are adding to your body, the effects of which are felt in the mind. So it is of the utmost importance that you pay careful attention to what you eat and how much you eat.

A Sattvic (light, pure and simple) Yoga diet goes a long way in helping you de-stress and is strongly recommended at all times. In fact, if only we were to stick to a light, pure and simple diet that is predominantly vegetarian, we would be able to rid ourselves of many problems - physical, mental and emotional. So, if you heat heavy and spicy foods you are bound to feel heavy, lethargic, hot and steamy all over. This only stimulates stress further.

So, together with deep breathing and Shavasana (Corpse Pose) please pay adequate attention to your diet, particularly during the exam season. We also strongly recommend that you enroll in a Yoga institute in the vicinity of your home, school or college and practice Yoga on a regular basis.
