Guidelines For Doing Yoga At Home

The beauty of Yoga is that it can be performed anywhere without the need for any expensive equipment or props. Ideally, Yoga should be practiced in a well-ventilated room on a Yoga mat. It can even be performed outdoors. So yes, it is possible to take up Yoga at home. You can safely perform Yoga in any room, or your backyard, or porch. However, before you take this important step towards ensuring health and fitness, there are a couple of things that you should keep in mind.

Learn The Basics: If you have never practiced Yoga before, I would recommend that you join a Yoga school for a couple of months so that you can learn the basics under the watchful eye of a trained Yoga instructor. Better yet, you could find an instructor to come and teach you the basic poses in the comfort of your home. While this will prove to be more expensive than learning Yoga from a book, DVD, television program, or online course, it is still the best method of learning yoga if you want to obtain maximum benefits from your practice. This is because Yoga involves many complex poses and postures that need to be performed properly and in the correct sequence in order to be beneficial. In addition, every exercise also has a certain breathing pattern associated with it. Due to these nuances, it is very difficult to learn the proper Yoga techniques without the guidance of a trained teacher. Once you have been thoroughly grounded in the basics, you can continue to practice Yoga safely from the comfort of your home.

Define A Time: Yoga should ideally be performed early in the mornings. However, it can also be safely performed at other times as per your convenience. What is important is to chalk out a certain time in your daily schedule for Yoga and stick to it. When you have a fixed and defined routine for practicing Yoga, it becomes easier to prevent it from being relegated to the backbench in the overall scheme of things. Make your Yoga session a sacred time when you can be one with your body and mind. Let friends, neighbours, and relatives know that they shouldn’t disturb you when it is time for your Yoga session. Block out all extraneous thoughts and focus on performing your Yoga routine properly.

Practice On An Empty Stomach: Yoga uses a lot of core conditioning techniques and shouldn’t be practiced when your stomach is full. At best you will feel uncomfortable and bloated; at worst you may get indigestion and nausea. Try not to eat for at least an hour before performing your yoga routine.
