Swelling of glands accompanied by fever is an extremely distressing condition since it brings with it throat ache and weakness. The swollen glands in the throat are usually caused by sinusitis in which the sinus cavity gets clogged with phlegm. Apart from causing intense discomfort and pain in the throat which could stretch upwards to the jaws and down towards the shoulders and arms, swollen glands also lead to a difficulty in swallowing food. Sometimes the pain becomes so intense that it also becomes difficult to move the head and arms. There are some simple things you can do at home to treat the condition and reduce the discomfort caused by swollen glands.

Treatment and remedy:

It is of prime importance to treat the infection causing swollen glands; therefore you should try and improve blood circulation in that area. This can be achieved by gently massaging the area with the finger tips. This helps to soothe the pain and improves the circulation of blood in the throat, thus speeding up the healing process. Another way to improve blood circulation in the area is by way of hydrotherapy or application of hot and cold compresses alternately. You can keep two bowls filled with warm and cold water respectively and two towels ready and then soak the towels in the water and place them on the swollen gland pressing lightly and alternating between the warm and cold towel. Repetition of this hydrotherapy 3-4 times a day for 15 to 20 minutes is beneficial for reducing the swelling and soothing the discomfort. In addition to this, you should drink warm water with fresh lemon juice mixed with 1 tsp of honey several times a day, to soothe the pain and treat the infection. Honey is excellent for treating the infection. Drinking herbal teas such as chamomile tea, peppermint tea and ginger tea are beneficial for treating the infection and also provide relief from the pain in the throat. A decoction prepared by boiling some water with basil leaves and cinnamon powder for 15 to 20 minutes should be sipped 3 to 4 times a day to treat the swollen glands and fever. You can also gargle frequently using warm water with a pinch of salt. Garlic is also excellent for treating the infection that has caused the swollen glands and fever. You can either swallow 2 pearls of garlic every morning or use it liberally in your food preparations to aid the healing process.
