Running And Diabetes

If you've considered taking up running and diabetes is a concern, then you shouldn't rethink your decision. Regular exercise is even more important for a person with diabetes. Diabetes is a disease that affects the blood sugar levels of a person. This in turn leads to many complications. There are two types of diabetes – Type 1 and Type 2. The latter is the most common form of diabetes and generally affects adults who are overweight. Type 2 diabetes occurs when the body does not produce enough insulin or when there is insulin resistance by the cells in the body. Type 1 diabetes or Insulin dependent diabetes may occur at any age but generally in childhood or adolescence. This kind of diabetes is caused by a complete deficiency of insulin. Insulin injections are required in order to cope with the disease. One of the best things you can do when you find out you have diabetes is to exercise. A healthy diet coupled with exercise is the key to controlling diabetes. Exercise also helps insulin to work better.

Running is a good form of exercise for diabetes. If in the past you have been running and diabetes has recently been discovered, then you need to keep up the practice, as it helps one to manage the diabetes. This is especially in the case of Type 2 diabetics as it can help them manage their weight. The benefits of running are:-

  • Improves the body’s ability to make use of insulin
  • Lowers blood glucose levels
  • Improves cardiovascular fitness
  • Decreases the total amount of insulin your body makes in a day.
  • Permits the muscles to take up glucose without insulin.

If you have Type 1 diabetes, ensure that you have enough insulin or energy to keep you going throughout the run. Do check with your physician on how long you can run if you suffer with Type 1 diabetes.

It is wise to invest in a good pair of shoes and proper socks before you set off running. Double layers socks are best as they help prevent blisters. If you are diabetic who chooses to run, care must be taken to avoid even the slightest injury. Diabetics should be especially careful not to injure their feet and lower legs. Start off slowly – do not overdo the running. Ensure that you carry an energy drink or some glucose with you at all times. Try to run with a partner if possible. It will also keep you more motivated and keep you running. Running is an inexpensive sport. It is a popular choice for diabetics who want to keep the disease under control. Do however, check with your doctor before starting to run.
