Is Bikram Yoga Mat Different Than Other Yoga Mats?

There are many kinds of mats available in the market – Sticky mats, Standard Plastic Mats, Cork or Jute Mats, Rubber Mats, Bikram Yoga Mats, Pilates Mats. The sticky mat, the traditional one, is the commonest type of Yoga mat. Such a mat offers very little padding since it is very thin. But, nowadays you get mats with much more padding, which allow for a better feel. Some of the mats even come with a washable, protective cover that goes over them to help absorb most of the moisture. This helps to reduce the possibility of slipping and falling. They offer you several benefits. Firstly, they help support you better, particularly during Surya Namaskar (Sun Salutation), when you are moving from one stance to the next; and in difficult poses they prevent you from slipping and falling. They even help provide quite a bit of padding to your hips, knees and back.
The Bikram Yoga mat is considered a critical piece of Yoga paraphernalia, especially, for doing Bikram Yoga Poses. These special mats are known to help the practitioner participate properly in the specially designed Bikram Yoga workout. Since Bikram Yoga poses are done in very intense heat, in a manner that the practitioner perspires a lot, when it becomes wet, your Yoga mat will never become slippery. Since many of the Bikram Yoga poses are done on the mat itself – it would be extremely uncomfortable to do them on a hard surface – Bikram Yoga mats are specially designed to provide the practitioner that extra amount of padding. However, the extra amount of padding is not too thick, either, as many of the Bikram yoga poses are balancing ones; and, also, if the mat s too thick and gets too soggy, it can cause you to lose your balance.
Finally, the Bikram Yoga is sticky enough to help you get a good grip with your palms, fingers, toes and soles, particularly when doing the balancing poses; and each and every pose involves a certain element of balance. The Bikram Yoga mat is 30 inches wide; this is much wider than standard mats. It is also better fit for taller students. It is far lighter than other mats – lightweight enough that you can carry it easily and effortlessly on your back in the cool little carrying sack that goes with it. Best of all, most Bikram Yoga mats are made of all natural materials, so you don’t have to worry about contributing to non-biodegradable garbage or environmental damage.
