What is the best yoga mat?

There are several types of yoga mats available in the market. Yoga is a very popular fitness activity and looking for a yoga mat should not be a problem. However, what is best for you often depends upon the kind of yoga you are doing, the frequency of your yoga practice, and what you want in a yoga mat. Also, your favorite color, your favorite yoga store and accessories, will determine what you finally buy and what you consider best.

If you are doing Ashtanga yoga, which a more vigorous form of yoga, then you will need a mat that has better padding and is more durable. If you do Ashtanga yoga on a daily basis, then you may want to buy the most expensive yoga mat, which is known as the Manduka black yoga mat. If you do not want to buy an expensive yoga mat, then buy a standard one that is about 4mm in thickness. You may also want to use a rug instead of a mat, so that the fabric can absorb your perspiration.

People who are environment-friendly, often avoid using standard mats because these are made of polyvinyl chloride (PVC). This material is linked to various types of cancer and PVC cannot be recycled. You can use an eco-friendly yoga mat if you wish. You can get these at any store that deals with environment-friendly yoga accessories. If you are a senior citizen, then you can use a thicker yoga mat so that you won’t get injured or hurt while practicing yoga.

For children, there are other kinds of yoga mats that are colorful with cartoon motifs or interesting pictures that are appealing to kids. You can also get yoga accessories for kids to help make yoga more interesting to them.

You can get yoga mats that are made of cork and jute. These mats are environmentally friendly. However, since these mats are made of porous plant material, when you exercise on these, your perspiration gets absorbed into the mat. Thus, it can smell and isn’t totally hygienic. You need to wash these regularly. Rubber yoga mats are another option for you. These are good for people who are eco-friendly and are economical too. However, if you are allergic to latex, then do not buy a rubber mat for your yoga practice. You might even think of using a Pilates mats for your yoga practice.

Do survey the market for the types of yoga mats and buy one that suits your needs.
