Combining yoga with gym or weight training is an excellent combination but only if you are consistent with both. Yoga helps tone and also shapes the body. Besides this it also improves flexibility and stamina. Weight training if done properly and under supervision can help build muscle strength and burn calories. Mixing workouts is always a good idea as it keeps your body guessing and prevents boredom from setting in.
With regards to what schedule you should follow – it would really all depend on the type of yoga you are doing. Many people who practice ‘power yoga’ or other more strenuous forms of yoga prefer to simply add some light cardio such as walking or using the elliptical trainer before their yoga class. In such situations, you could maybe alternate days of yoga and weight training at the gym. On the other hand, if your yoga is more about stretching and relaxation, by all means complete your weight training before the class if you can. You can then use your yoga class to cool down and reap the meditative benefits of regular practice. Keep in mind though that a lot of people don’t realize just how hard yoga is, especially as you intensify each asana and hold it for a longer time. So, give your body the rest it requires to maximize the benefits of either workout.
