Symptoms and Treatment for Amnesia

Amnesia is a state in which the memory is disturbed and in ordinary words it means the loss of memory. There are many causes for amnesia. It may be organic or functional. Organic causes could be due to damage in the brain through natural disease or trauma or the use of sedative drugs. Functional reasons include psychological factors, an example of which is hysterical post-traumatic amnesia. Amnesia in middle-aged to elderly people most often occurs when they lose their memory partially or completely. Some forget events from their childhood, some forget newer information and some forget specific events.

What are the home remedies for amnesia? There are many drugs that treat amnesia; nevertheless, one can resort to home remedies which are also helpful in curing amnesia. These home remedies will help advance mental ability and enable the nervous system to function better. Amnesia caused by old age or emotional reasons can be treated with these home remedies. Let’s take a look at some of them.

  • Walnuts are considered to be an effective home remedy to regain memory. Eat twenty grams of walnuts every day to improve your memory.
  • Apples are a rich source of minerals and vitamins and are good for treating amnesia. You can eat apples with a glass of milk and a little honey for best results.
  • Almonds are the best whole food source of vitamin E, zinc, magnesium, and fiber. They also release chemicals which improve and strengthen your memory. Eat a handful every morning.
  • You can try rosemary tea, which is an excellent memory enhancer. Drink it once or twice a day with a dash of lemon juice.
  • You can also prepare a decoction of holy basil leaves and drink it once it cools. Eating these leaves after washing them as they are also beneficial in the treatment of amnesia.
  • A decoction of the Brahmi herb is believed to be helpful in curing amnesia. You can take it every morning on an empty stomach.
  • Pepper powder mixed with honey is a simple remedy to reduce loss of memory.
  • Foods that augment memory include blueberries, spinach, onions, broccoli, red beets, grapes, eggplant, collard greens, Brussels sprouts, kale, cabbage and plums.
  • `Good fats’ or unsaturated fats from olive, canola, and grape seed oil have oleic acids which are converted into oleoylethanolamide or OEA during digestion. This enhances the memory signals in the brain that keep track of emotional events.

A balanced diet based on foods that prevent memory loss is considered effective in keeping the brain healthy and keeping amnesia at bay.
