Traditionally, yoga has always been practiced to attain discipline and fitness of the body and mind. In recent years, some variations of the conventional yoga practice have been developed. One such variation is the power yoga workout, which is a more westernized and also more rigorous type of yoga. Traditional yoga, known as Ashtanga yoga, is based on a specific series of postures. Power yoga workouts, on the other hand, do not follow this principle and hence a power yoga workout may vary considerably. Power yoga classes are also taught differently and each teacher may vary in his or her practice of the exercise. The main emphasis of power yoga is on building strength and improving flexibility.
A power yoga exercise workout involves practice of a series of poses while keeping the breathing synchronized at the same time. This allows for harmony between the body and mind. This entire practice may seem flowing and smooth, but it actually quite vigorous as it stretches each limb and part of the body to the maximum. The individual must switch from one yoga pose to another in a steady and slow pace. Some poses may have to be held for a longer period of time. Most poses involving holding for five breaths. A warm-up is essential before beginning a power yoga routine. This helps to stretch the muscles and get them ready for more rigorous exercise. Power yoga may be difficult for beginners. It is also not advisable for those with any chronic illnesses or health problems. One needs to be physically fit in order to attempt a power yoga workout. The power yoga calories burned are much more than in traditional yoga due to the intensity of the workout. Therefore, this form of yoga is also beneficial for weight loss.
Besides power yoga, there are other forms of yoga as well. Bikran yoga, popularly known as hot yoga, is also a strenuous form of yoga. A bikram yoga workout involves the practice of yoga poses in a heated room. This environment increases the flexibility of the muscles and allows the individual to perform the exercise more easily and with a reduced risk of injury. Vinyasa yoga is a style of yoga in which one must switch from one pose to another in breath-synchronized motions. A vinyasa yoga workout is gentler and more balanced. It is based on the principle that the breath must lead one’s movements.

It's not an easy task to compute and determine the number of calories burned during a yoga section, since the intensity level of the type of yoga depends upon on the type of yogasanas being done and the endurance level of the individual. To give an average figure and individual weighing 130 pounds would burn around 260 calories an hour in a power yoga or Ashtanga yoga session. An intense yoga class comprising of quick, lithe and aggressive movements can burn approximately 400 calories an hour. The amount of calories burned depends upon the individual's weight, for example the more a person weighs, the more calories he or she burns. In order to calculate, use a simple formula that is, determine the number of calories burned by a particular class and divide the number burned by 130 pounds. The result must be multiplied by your weight in pounds.
