Yoga has been recognized all over the world as a great science that can be used to improve one’s health and lifestyle. If yoga is practiced regularly, in the right manner, it can have a positive and an excellent effect on your body, spirit and mind. It can help improve the quality of your physical, mental, emotional and social life. Some of the most successful people, from various industries, claim to practice yoga on a regular basis, for better performance and concentration at work. However, while yoga can be great if practiced in moderation and under the proper guidance of an expert, there are certain yoga side effects that people should be aware of.

One of the most important factors of yoga is that it should be practiced correctly and in the right way. Therefore, it is always recommended that beginners take up classes at professional yoga studios, where they can learn the various poses, postures and breathing techniques from qualified teachers. There have been a few reported cases of people suffering from severe injuries, because of overdoing it, or because of practicing certain postures incorrectly. There aren’t really any yoga side effects and the discipline is relatively safe as most enthusiasts claim, but this is only true if practiced under the right conditions. For example, driving a car is quite safe, provided you follow the traffic rules and know how to drive. Attempting to practice complicated poses without much knowledge and without guidance can subject you to some of these yoga side effects:
• Neck pain
• Severe backaches or even slip disc
• Wrist aches
• Tearing of tendons or ligaments
• Sprained ankles
• Knee aches
• Muscle pulls
• Vertigo

Hot Yoga, also known as Bikram Yoga has become very popular in the west. This style of yoga includes the practice of a sequence of 26 yoga exercises, in a room that has been heated to the temperature of 100 degrees Fahrenheit. Hot Yoga promotes excessive sweating, which is a great way to lose weight. At the same time, Hot yoga also increases strength and flexibility. However, there are certain side effects of hot yoga too. Practicing vigorous exercises in such a warm environment can raise the temperature of the body considerably. Moreover, Hot Yoga gives a false sense of flexibility to the muscles, which can result in some severe injuries. Moreover, several beginners have complained of nausea, dizziness and fatigue after the practice of Hot yoga.

Yoga side effects from practicing incorrect techniques are not limited to physical problems. People can also suffer from mental problems like panic attacks, increased anxiety, suicidal tendencies, confusion, pseudo psychosis and other such problems.

Therefore, before taking up yoga, it is absolutely essential that you check with a doctor, especially if you are suffering from any medical condition.

To understand why there's so much emphasis given on learning the poses correctly and practicing it without any error, it is important to realize how yoga functions and what actually does to the body.  How yoga works for the internal systems in the body is an intricate topic.  The very movements in yoga help to realign the various systems inside the body, such as a slipped disc or the condition of arthritis.  By gradually realigning the internal structure of the body, yoga as an alternative therapy complements modern medicine in healing and treating conditions.  All the poses and positions in yoga also known as asanas are specifically targeted for particular disorders.  While doing a specific pose the movements place stress or pressure on a particular organ, or a muscle tissue, or ligaments, or the joints etc. If the poses have been wrongly taught or learnt, it may have an adverse effect on the concerned organ in the body.

Moreover, there are bred for of approaches and poses involving intricate styles and body movement that need to be explained and done only under the guidance of a qualified instructor.  The breathing techniques and go hand-in-hand along with the movements are critical in determining the changing of a particular disorder or condition.  Hence it is vital that wrongly performed Yoga positions be corrected as immediately as possible to avoid further damage.  In advanced positions the practice of yoga also involves many twists and turns, and if the individual has been practicing it wrongly, it is likely that he or she may develop a sprain and cause damage to the ligaments and cartilage.
