Most doctors recommend a rest period of six weeks after delivery to give the body time to recover and heal itself. If you have had a normal delivery, it is generally safe to start exercising again after this six-week period. The Surya Namaskar or Sun Salutation consists of a series of yoga asanas that involve several posture changes – from sitting up to lying down, from forward bends to standing upright. Ease your body gently back into these poses and never rush into any asana. If the pose feels too difficult or there is pain, cut back and go slower. It will not serve any purpose to over stress your body and injure your healing muscles and ligaments.
If you have had a c-section, you may need to wait a little longer before adding Surya Namaskar to your yoga routine. Instead aim to build up your strength by practicing poses such as the Modified Cobra Pose, the Bridge Pose and the Warrior Pose. Gentle forward bends and breathing exercises will also help build up abdominal muscles and reduce fat. Once the scar tissues around your abdomen have totally healed and your doctor gives you the go ahead, you can introduce more demanding positions such as the Surya Namaskar into your exercise regime.
