Yoga and hypothyroidism
Yoga has provided much relief to individuals experiencing hypothyroidism. The constricting, extending and flexing that form the integral part of yoga postures and techniques is extremely critical in exercising the thyroid and hormonal glands. The endocrinal glands especially are richly benefited by the regular performance of yoga asanas as the exercises help to regulate the hormonal function and improve the flow of blood. According to yogic theory, the Sarvangasana, also known as the shoulder stand is the most effective in treating and eventually curing hypothyroidism. Sarvangasana involves the use of the inverted body pose where in the individual completely lifts himself in the air with the strength of the shoulders. Since this is against the normal flow of gravity, blood is rushed to the neck region from the feet and the legs and towards the set of the thyroid glands. According to practitioners of yoga, when the thyroid is daily stimulated in such a manner its activity resumes. However Sarvangasana must be performed only under the care and guidance of a practiced tutor.
One must practice great caution while exercising and also build a good deal of patience in performing the asanas. Yoga involves that the individual develop the skills over a period of time as the asanas get more difficult. However with daily practice, beginning at the elementary level, it is possible to master the art of various asanas to bring about general good health in the individual.
