Yoga Therapy For Ear Pain

(February 26, 2009)

I got ear pain due to mobile usage, are there any yoga or meditation techniques for solving this problem ?

If you have ear pain, you shouldn’t jump to any conclusions without a clinical diagnosis. There is a lot Yoga can do to help, provided you are able to get the right medical diagnosis. Yoga definitely helps to restore damaged nerves, muscles and cellular structures, even, on occasion, revive dead ones as has been noticed in the case of patients on dialysis who started urinating on their own after protracted Yoga practice, to the astonishment of all.  So, it is never too late to start any Yoga practice.

Do not confine your Yoga practices only to the problem area, because Yoga is a holistic science and art of living. It takes into consideration all factors and aspects of the practitioner’s health. Besides this all Yoga techniques are designed to touch and minister to each and every part of the body. What’s more, Yogic techniques help calm and soothe you mentally and emotionally as well because, according to Yoga all diseases and ailments originate in the mind and heart.

Yoga Therapy For Ear Pain

While you definitely have to devote more time to some specific Kriyas (cleansing techniques) you will have to practise other techniques as well. The cleansing techniques are:

  • Karana Andhra Dhauti (cleansing the auditory cavities)
  • Jala Neti (cleansing the nasal passages with saline water)
  • Sutra Neti (cleansing the nasal passages with a rubber catheter)
  • Vaman Dhauti (cleansing the stomach by vomiting clear water on an empty stomach)

Don’t forget, you must always be very careful since the ear is a very delicate organ, like the eye. You should learn to master the art of performing all the above cleansing techniques from an experienced, expert and licensed Yoga instructor, preferably from a reputed Yoga Institute. Together with them, you will also have to practise the following asanas (Yoga poses) in all these positions:

  • Shalabhasana (Locust pose)
  • Chakrasana (Wheel pose)
  • Adho Mukha Svanasana (Downward Dog pose)

Yogic diet for ear problems

Since all diseases are, for the most part, caused by improper diet, wrong lifestyle, stress and tension, it will help you immensely to adopt a Yogic diet. This is a Sattvic (light and predominantly vegetarian) rich in salads and seasonal fruit and low in cooked foods since it has been noticed that natural foods are more easily digestible and help detoxify and decontaminate the system better. Please steer clear of all junk / fast foods, confectionery products and all spicy foods, cigarettes and alcohol.  Also avoid ear drops, particularly the OTC variety dispensed without medical prescriptions.
