Suryanamaskar is a combination of 12 asanas that involves stretching of the entire body, and the knees play an important part during the bending portion of this exercise. While the suryanamaskar yoga exercise has multi-faceted benefits; some experts say that it might not be suitable for people suffering from knee pain. It is important to determine the reason for knee pain before considering doing the suryanamaskar. People suffering from mild cases of arthritis may be able to do this form of yoga and benefit from it; however it is not advised for people with advanced arthritis. This is also the case for people suffering from osteoarthritis. Doing the suryanamaskar might aggravate the pain and prove to be uncomfortable.
Yoga not only help in keeping the body fit but also to help ease mental stress, therefore if pain and discomfort becomes part of the exercise the purpose will be defeated. Consult your doctor in case of knee pain, who should be able to advise you on what form of exercises will be good for you. If you have enrolled in yoga classes, make sure you inform your instructor of your knee pain, he/ she will then accordingly advise you of the yoga exercises that can be done.
