According to Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), the energy, air or life force that travels through our bodies is responsible for our mental and physical wellness.
This life force is called chi, and most Traditional Chinese Medicine practices, such as the bamboo massage, work by restoring the flow of chi.
What is a bamboo massage?
According to the Chinese, chi flow can be disrupted by a number of reasons, starting from stress to lack of good food intake. Restoring the flow of chi is done using some form of alternative therapy such as a bamboo massage or other forms of massage therapies like acupuncture or acupressure. Simply put, a bamboo massage makes use of bamboo stalks to massage a person.
How does it work?
Bamboo massage works very similar to that of a traditional massage, in which the knots, stresses and stiffness in the body is relieved through the application of pressure to loosen the knots, relax the stiffness and relieve pain. However, in a bamboo massage, bamboo stalks are used instead of hands. Not only does the bamboo cane help massage the deeper layers of the muscles, loosening the knots better than simply using the hands, the bamboo itself is believed to have medicinal properties, helping to relieve various stress related as well as respiratory ailments.
Bamboo sticks are used by rolling them over the body and kneading the muscles simply by running the sticks up and down, clearing blockages and stimulating the flow of chi. The sticks used can be of varying sizes, depending on the part of the body they are being used on. The duration of the massage can also vary from about 30 minutes to a little over an hour, depending on each individual’s needs.
The bamboo that is used in bamboo massage is usually made of natural organic bamboo, with its insides hollow. Usually, the bamboo used is at room temperature. However, in order to intensify the massage, the bamboo is sometimes heated to slightly higher temperature to facilitate the massage into the deeper layers of the muscle.
Often, this type of massage is accompanied by hot stone massages.
What does it feel like?
Bamboo massage feels very similar to any other type of massage, with its effects varying from person to person. Some people feel extremely relaxed, calm and pain free after a massage, while others feel extremely energized and revitalized. Whatever the result, most people feel much better both in body as well as mind after one of these massages.
Benefits of massage
With more and more people using complementary medicine such as massage therapy to help treat major illnesses, the benefits of such ancient forms of therapy are becoming more clearly understood. Listed below are some of the benefits that the bamboo massage is believed to provide.
Apart from these benefits, the bamboo massage is also better for the massage therapists themselves. This is because unlike normal massage therapy that uses the hands to apply pressure, the bamboo helps to apply pressure without the masseuse straining, thereby relieving the masseuse of back, shoulder, wrist and arm pain.
Massages are usually completely safe with no harmful side effects. Anyone can benefit from massages starting from children to the elderly. The only thing that needs to be taken into consideration is that bamboo massage or any other massage therapy cannot take the place of regular medical intervention. So, if you are experiencing pain or any other problems, first consult with a doctor. They will be able to put you on to the right course of treatment that includes massage therapy as part of the treatment plan.
