Kapalbhatti Yoga Benefits: Can we do kapalbhatti in standing postures?
This is a completely valid question regarding Kapalabhatti. This technique can just as well, easily and effortlessly be done in standing postures. It is however in most cases preferable to practice it in seated meditative postures such as Sukhasana (Easy Pose), Padmasana (Lotus Pose) or Vajrasana (Thunderbolt Pose). Remember, the most important part of Pranayama (Breathing Exercises) is to be able to breathe fully and more deeply. Right breathing is crucial to your health, for your mental focus and to achieve a sense of calm. Kapalabhatti is a kriya (cleansing technique) that is extremely stimulating as well as purifying, but only if done the right way.
Through a rapid succession of sharp exhalations your nasal passages are purified and cleansed of all toxins and impurities. This type of breathing uses powerful abdominal contractions which, in the process helps tone up the abdominal muscles as well. In fact, you shouldn’t be one bit surprised if you start to perspire in this powerful exercise. This powerful cleansing technique will definitely be more effective if done in a seated posture rather than in a standing posture. Let us explain why:
- In practicing Kapalabhatti, the structure of your spinal-cord should be in the “Dhyanasana”. This is a must for all Pranayama (Breathing Exercises) as well as meditation.
- Done in a seated posture Kapalabhatti gives your diaphragm the proper strokes required to expel more stale air. Likewise, done sitting down, it stimulates the pancreas, liver, stomach, large and small intestines as well as the other internal organs of the body much better than if done in a standing posture. It fact, it would deliver less results or even have adverse effects on your body.
- Finally, Kapalabhatti done in a seated posture is far more effective than in a standing posture since, this way, it attracts a lot more Cosmic (Pranic) Energy and activates all the Chakras (energy plexes) located in the Subtle (Bio-plasmic) Body.
