Can Yoga Exercises Be a Substitute For Going To A Chiropractor

Chiropractic is a profession and health care approach which focuses on the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of the musculoskeletal system, particularly the spine, based on the hypothesis that these complaints affect your general health via your nervous system. This is usually considered an alternative medicine, complementary to modern Allopathy. The main chiropractic treatment entails manual therapy. This includes manipulation of the spine, the joints and soft tissues. Chiropractic treatment even includes health and lifestyle counseling, together with a set of exercises.

For long, chiropractic has been at loggerheads with mainstream medicine. It is sustained by ideas like subluxation, which do not really have solid science for its basis. The American Medical Association had even branded chiropractic an “unscientific cult” and imposed sanctions on it, till it lost a 1987 antitrust case. A number of studies of treatments employed by chiropractors have been done with conflicting results.

Yoga, on the other hand, has had no such history. It is a holistic science and art of living, an experiential science that has only been known to deliver positive results. True, the results may often be slow in manifesting themselves. But, there is no doubting their veracity, even though many of the techniques were not understood in the beginning. For instance, it is only after Yoga gained prevalence as a viable alternative therapy that the link between breathing patterns and a person’s state of mind were established. Likewise, over time it also came to be proved that only Yogasanas (poses) can exercise and tone up the internal organs and glands of the body.

Yoga is the only alternative healing therapy known to man that has proven itself effective in achieving results in mental and emotional disturbances through such potent practices as a combination of Yoga diet, pranayamas (breathing exercises) and meditation. Psychiatrists and psychologists are, day by day, referring more and more of their patients to Yoga. So much so that medical institutions, the world over, are considering making certain Yoga practices a mandatory part of the recommendations for a healthy lifestyle for patients and individuals alike, healthy or unhealthy.

If going to a Chiropractor would help achieve such results, by all means, go ahead and do so. But, before you do, be warned of both, the results – short term and long term – as well as the pitfalls. Scientific research has acknowledged the role of yoga in health care, despite the fact the fact that there is a lot yet to be understood about its workings. The British Medical Journal, the world’s leading authority on medical matters, carries at least one article on the benefits of Yoga as a healing and permanently curative therapy in almost every of its issues. We don’t know of any other proven technique, least of all chiropractic.
