How Meditation Helps In Treating Anxiety

Meditation And Anxiety

We lead busy, complex lives. It isn’t surprising that we are often wrought with anxiety and stress, which hampers our ability to think straight and has a harmful effect on mental and physical health.
Anxiety results in a buildup of negativity. It is a process that pounds down the mind and body. Prolonged or frequent anxiety has severe physical manifestations. These include high blood pressure, fatigue, severe depression, weakness, etc.

If you are looking for relief against anxiety, meditation might be just what you need. Meditation is a mental discipline which involves focusing the mind’s attention on a single point to achieve complete stillness of mind. It is a state of body-mind relaxation; it helps calm and rejuvenate the system. It is the perfect self-help technique; it is convenient as it can be performed anywhere and at any time – on the subway, right before an exam or just before an important meeting.

Regular human impulse is to react negatively in the face of conflict. The mind is panicked and as a result so is the body. Almost immediately, the heart rate shoots up and breathing becomes shallow and hurried. Meditation helps you calm the mind and beat off anxiety. It teaches you to be positive and relaxed even in the face of a stressful situation. It makes you emotionally and mentally stronger, helping you resolve conflict with composure.

The human mind is cluttered with thoughts. At any given point of time there is a running commentary taking place in your head. When you are anxious, these thoughts run amuck, drawing up a cycle of negativity. The more you think about it, the more anxious you become; the more anxious you become, the more you think about the situation. The practice of meditation teaches you how to break this dark cycle and control your mind.

Meditation teaches you to detach from the problem, rise above the anxiety and give the over worked mind some rest. Meditation gives the mind (and body) the time to recover and recharge. It teaches you to refocus and channel that wasted energy towards a more positive spirit which in turn enables you to solve conflict more efficiently. You learn how to make the mind still. Once the mind is peaceful, the physical symptoms brought on by anxiety too begin to disappear.

Anxiety has a vice like grip on the fragile mind. It sticks its claws deep into your insecurities and fears. It winds you up tight and has you regretting past mishaps and mapping out future consequences. It’s easy to see why the mind is exhausted. The regular practice of yoga stops the distressed mind from running across time frames. Meditations help you focus on the present. You don’t waste valuable energy thinking about how things will pan out. Instead this energy is spent on nourishing the mind back to its strength.

With regular and effective practice of meditation you will begin to feel serene and positive at all times. When a stressful situation arises, you will be able to handle it without getting emotionally scarred by it
