Track Workouts

Most people associate track workouts with professional sprinters and Olympic runners. While it is true that track workouts are usually a part of a professional runner’s practice routine, they can also be used by beginners who are interested in building their stamina, strength and improving their overall running performance. Beginners should practice track workouts once a week, followed by a day of rest and recovery. Running workouts on the tracks should involve greater speed for shorter distances, which is a great way of boosting the body’s aerobic ability. The runner can learn to breathe and burn oxygen more efficiently, which can enable them to run faster. If you are planning to add track workouts to your running schedule, given below are a few tips to help you get started:

  • Check the distance of the track that you are practicing on and prepare your workout plan accordingly. For most tracks, a lap is the distance of a quarter mile.
  • Start off by jogging for the first half of the track and then sprint for the second half. It may be advisable for you to slow jog or perhaps even walk the other lap so that you can catch your breath.
  • Speed workouts should not exceed the distance of the race that you are training for. Stick to the number if miles that you need to practice for and try to improve your running speed during these sessions, without tiring your body out unnecessarily.
  • Gradually, progress to the level of track workout for sprinters, where you increase the distance you sprint. It is important for you to keep a count of how many laps you are running, sprinting and walking, so that you can judge your own progress.
  • Set a weekly track workout schedule and make sure that you do not skip any. Regular practice not only builds strength and stamina, but can also increase your confidence.
  • Take some extra time, for stretching exercises before and after your track workouts. These exercises help loosen the muscles to perform in a better manner and prevent the risks of running injuries.
