An upset stomach can affect daily routines. Due to the uncomfortable sensations resulting from a stomach upset, the person may skip meals. The diet is also restricted and most often milk consumption is eliminated or restricted. This may not be the best thing to do in all cases, as this could affect calcium intake.
The most common causes of a stomach upset are over eating, eating very quickly, excess acid production in the stomach, eating foods that are high in fat, intake of certain medications, alcohol or caffeine consumption and acid reflux disease. More serious causes of a stomach upset include gastric ulcers, gall bladder inflammation, inadequate supply of oxygen to the heart, pancreatitis, gastritis and stress or anxiety. Consumption of raw and uncooked food could also cause stomach upsets. Eating food from contaminated utensils and drinking polluted water could also upset the stomach.

There are several home remedies that are effective in treating a stomach upset. Cinnamon is most effective in alleviating stomach problems. Boil some cinnamon in water until it is reduced to one fourth of the original quantity. Drink this for a quick relief from stomach upsets. Another home remedy that is believed to be effective in curing a stomach upset is to eat some burnt toast. This uncanny remedy is known to work as the burnt portion of the bread absorbs the gas, thereby relieving symptoms of a stomach upset. In order to aid digestion, add mint to soups or other foods. Mint juice can also be taken to ease flatulence and pressure in the stomach. Drinking water in which coriander seeds have been boiled will also help to ease stomach problems. Drinking pomegranate juice will also help to take care of an upset stomach. Ginger is very effective in relieving indigestion. The ingredient gingerol that is contained in ginger helps to treat stomach disorders. Ginger can be taken directly or in the form of tea. Candied ginger may also be consumed for stomach problems.
