Urinary Tract Infection In Men And Children

By Patricia | October 28, 2009

The presence of pus cells in urine is medically termed as Pyuria and is a common symptom in a number of medical conditions. Probably the most common occurrence of pyuria can be attributed to the existence of a urinary tract infection. Urinary tract infections are a very common condition and are the second most common reason for doctor visits throughout the course of the year, being the reason of visit in about 8.3 million instances. For reasons still unknown, women are known to suffer from urinary tract infections more often than men and almost one in every five women will experience a urinary tract infection at least once during the course of her life. When the condition affects a man, the condition can be quite severe. Urinary tract infections are usually caused by bacteria entering the tract which consists of the kidneys, bladder, ureters and urethra – which all play a significant role in the removal of liquid waste and expulsion of the same from the body. The kidneys will filter the blood and remove any excess water from it to produce urine which is then passed to the bladder where it is stored until the volume of urine collected reaches a level that prompts the brain to eliminate the waste. The waste is then expelled from the body through the urethra. The infection can take place anywhere along this pathway and, in most cases, it affects the lower portions such as the urethra and bladder. Urinary tract infections are more common in adults than when compared to children, however, about 1 to 2 percent of all children will experience a urinary tract infection.

Home Remedies

Due to the rather common existence of urinary tract infections, there are a number of effective home remedies that will serve to cure the condition or at least reduce the amount of discomfort and pain that it causes to the affected individual. Adding a teaspoon of baking soda to a glass of water will help ease the infection as the soda helps neutralize the acidity of the urine. Studies have shown that drinking cranberry juice may help significantly reduce the likelihood of contracting the condition or even preventing its worsening. Cranberries contain a chemical that prevents the infection causing bacteria from settling down in the bladder while also having a very mild antibiotic effect. If the existence of pus in your urine is attributed to the existence of a urinary tract infection, you should drink a minimum of about 4 glasses of cranberry juice everyday to keep your bladder infection free.
