I am sixty years old, what should I use to make my nail healthy and stop splitting?
There are many reasons for nails splitting or not growing well. So, you need to first address those problems, and the nails will take care of themselves. Usually, nails become brittle and break easily when they are extremely dry. Also, if your hands are exposed to harsh chemicals for long periods of time, the nails become weak and break. So, if you soak your hands in detergents while cleaning or washing, wear hand gloves to protect both your hands and nails. You must also wear gloves while doing other work like gardening. Apart from these, deficiencies of Vitamin C, calcium, and iron in diet also lead to weak and breaking nails. So, consume lots of vegetables and fresh fruits to make up for the nutrients. Also, when there is a reduction in stomach acid, the body cannot absorb minerals from food, which also leads to breakage of nails. If that is the case, you can add a little apple cider vinegar to water and consume it to increase the stomach acid. Consuming green leafy vegetables will also provide enough minerals to your body. Consume more of cauliflower, peanuts and lentils as they contain a nutrient called biotin, which promotes nail growth and also makes them stronger. Thyroid insufficiency also leads to imbalance in endrodine, which causes nails to split. So, you must really find out what is causing nails to break in your case and work on that problem.
Remedies For Healthy Nails
And, while you treat the cause of brittle nails, you can rely on some home remedies to strengthen your nails. You can heat some amount of olive oil and soak your nails in it for 10 minutes everyday to strengthen them. Or, you can simply moisturize your nails with any hydrogenated vegetable oil or clarified butter. These are also beneficial in making nails stronger and promoting growth. Applying transparent nail paint also strengthens nails. However, do bear in mind that nail paints have chemicals in them, which may also weaken your nails. So, once you take the nail paint off, do not apply a new coat for a few days. If you use nail paint remover, make sure that it does not contain acetone, as it weakens the nails. Before going to bed at night, smear petroleum jelly on your hands and nails and cover them up with gloves. This will seal in the moisturizer and make your nails stronger. Lastly, prevent any kind of infection from afflicting your fingers.
