Lavender aromatherapy is done with lavender essential oil. Herbs and flowers derive their fragrance from essential oils. These oils come from the various parts of the herbs and flowers – from the leaves, petals, resin, root, bark or wood. The essential oils of every herb have a different effect on the body and each of them has different benefits. Lavender has its own special essential oil that is used in various ways for aromatherapy. It can be used in candles, bath salts, massage oils and lotions as well as soaps for a healing effect.

History: Lavender has been used since ancient times for its aromatherapy qualities. It is believed that the Egyptians used lavender for their mummification process. The Romans used the fragrance of lavender as a breath freshener and in baths. Women in the Renaissance period and in the Middle Ages used dried lavender herb to keep away plague. Now, after all these years, lavender is still in fashion for its overall healing properties.

Lavender for health: Lavender oil can be used for an aromatherapy massage or can be inhaled for health benefits. Experts say that breathing in the fragrance of lavender oil can energize the olfactory receptor cells that are the main carriers of nerve impulses to the brain. Some of it is also absorbed in the bloodstream through the respiratory system.

Anxiety: If you are feeling anxious or worried, try inhaling lavender and indulging in a little lavender aromatherapy.

Hair loss: Lavender can be effective for preventing hair loss, when mixed with cedar wood, rosemary and thyme.

Overall wellbeing: You can use lavender essential oil in your bath to boost your mood and reduce the negative influences that effect use like frustration and anger. So, if you’re frustrated or stressed at work, soak in a lavender-scented bath.

Pain: Lavender is said to relieve pain in the lower back. It also eases other kinds of pain in muscles, lumbago, sprains and rheumatism. It is also good for relieving pain in joints.

Agitation: Research and studies have shown that lavender aromatherapy can decrease the agitation that patients with dementia experience.

Antibacterial: Lavender essential oil is said to have anti-bacterial qualities.

Respiratory disorders: Use lavender aromatherapy for treating respiratory problems like tonsillitis, laryngitis, whooping cough, bronchitis, sinus congestion, asthma, cold, cough, flu and throat infections. You can inhale the vapor for relief.

Other uses: Lavender oil and aromatherapy can treat several other conditions like heartburn, toothaches, headaches, insomnia, minor burns, low blood pressure, motions sickness and discomfort after childbirth.
