Running And Varicose Veins

Varicose or dilated veins are fairly common and usually become symptomatic anywhere between the age group of 20 till 40. The way a normally functioning leg vein works is that it sends the blood pumping in the upward direction to the person’s heart. These veins are found to contain valves which help in the prevention of the blood flow in the downward direction. When it is found that the valves are malfunctioning then the blood starts to flow in a direction away from the person’s heart. This causes the veins to start becoming dilated. This could be a fairly slow and a chronic problem. Thus running is not a real problem. At times the veins begin to bulge or get spider like in nature. This can happen for a variety of reasons. When a woman is pregnant varicose veins tend to become a more prominent feature. It is also usually accompanied by stinging in one’s legs and a feeling of pressure. If the bulging of one’s veins becomes acute, it could lead to a condition of thrombophlebitis and also of trauma. If the person runs, then it is advisable to stop running. One should visit the vascular surgeon who will conduct tests and suggest the proper treatment. If the condition gets better then one can consider starting running again while using a support hose.

When running or jogging, the best way to reduce pressure on the veins and prevent varicose veins from happening is by running or jogging on gentler ground. If one runs on harder ground like pavement ground, the impact causes one’s veins to swell and puts additional pressure on them. This can cause a feeling of discomfort and even pain. When jogging or running, preferably choose tracks that are made of grass or cinder. Even dirt tracks are preferable to run on. It always helps to move around and run as it helps to keep the blood circulating. Those who have an inactive and sedentary lifestyle are more prone to getting varicose veins. Getting one’s weight under control is another additional requirement for reducing varicose veins. Wearing support stockings can prove to be quite useful in providing support and relief needed. Gradient stockings are considered to be even better than the regular stockings and can help in keeping ones veins down due to the slight compression that they provide. One should also wear appropriate shoes while running or jogging so as not to cause any discomfort to ones legs and feet.
