Aromatherapy For Children

Aromatherapy is an ancient therapeutic art that involves the treatment of diseases using aromatic botanical herbs and their extracts. It basically includes the use of essential oils that are obtained from different herbs, trees, plants, spices, flowers, fruits, twigs, and shrubs. The essential oils may be synthesized artificially but they are no match in their effectiveness with the real and pure natural essential oils. Some famous and widely used essential oils are lavender oil, neroli oil, peppermint, jasmine, and olive oil. They are used individually and are an important component of many medicines as well.

Can aromatherapy be regarded as a complementary procedure for treating children with behavior and emotional disorders? Children are the most sensitive community of the world. They are innocent; yet, they see and observe the world, its environment, people and their behaviors more keenly than grownups. As no one is more sensitive than a child, they are more vulnerable to emotional and behavioral disorders. They model their behavior based on observations of their parents and elders and react emotionally if they are hurt by anyone.

These behaviors and emotions are normal for any child but take the form of behavioral and emotional disorders if their elders neglect them and do not pay proper attention and interest in an attempt to understand their problems. Environmental pollution can also affect their minds and influence emotional behavior.

Recent research has shown that aromatherapy is useful in treating behavioral and emotional disorders and diseases. These behavior and emotional disorders include aggressiveness, rebellious behavior, destroying things without any cause, threatening pets and other children, lying, stealing, smoking, drinking, hitting, pushing, yelling, running away from studies and school, early sexual activities, biting of nails, and grinding teeth.

Aromatherapy can be useful in treating many of these disorders. Massaging with aromatherapy essential oils creates a relieving effect on the body and also relaxes the mind.

In some studies, children with behavioral or emotional disorders were kept in a room which was sprayed with aromatic essential oils. After leaving the room, 89 percent of these children were reported to be better behaved and were more mild mannered than before. They were also less rude and more cooperative. Apparently the therapeutic effects of these essential oils relaxed their minds, thus minimizing their hostility and anger to the world.

More research is in progress to discover the advantages of aromatherapy for the treatment of emotional and behavioral disorders in children and adults alike.
