If you are suffering from a heart problem, the best plan of action for treatment of this condition is to pay careful attention to your diet. A heart patient’s diet will aim to reduce cholesterol levels which are the main cause of any heart disease. Hence the stipulation of any heart patient’s diet will be to reduce intake of saturated fats as this is the reason why the cholesterol in the body increases. One of the important points in a heart patient’s diet is to restrict the amount of dairy products and meats the patient is consuming. Also animal fat should be replaced by unsaturated fats. These unsaturated fats can be found in canola, olive oil and peanut oil. A heart patient should be eating no more than 5 ounces of lean meats, fish, poultry, dry beans or dry peas in a day.
As far as eggs are concerned, the heart patient should limit his intake to 2 yolks of egg per week. There is no restriction on the intake of egg whites. They can have certain low fat products and also low fat milk. The portion size should not exceed more than a cup of non fat milk in a day or a cup of non fat yogurt. They can even have low fat yogurt. A single ounce of low fat cheese or fat free cheese is permitted in a day. A heart patient can eat anywhere from 2 portions of fruit to 4 portions of fruit in a day. A single piece of fruit like an orange or an apple or half a banana is permitted per day. Additionally a cup of melon or berries is allowed and a little more than half a cup of a fruit juice. They are allowed to eat 3 to about 5 vegetables in a day. This will include a single cup of any raw leafy green vegetables, a quarter cup of raw or cooked vegetables and about three quarter cup of some vegetable juice that is freshly prepared. Bread, pasta, cereals, rice and other grains are also included in a heart patient’s diet.
