Jal Neti Yoga Techniques

Jal neti refers to a pot of water, and this practice in yoga is used for relieving the symptoms of sinusitis, headaches, or a blocked nose. With careful practice, you can perform the jal neti techniques correctly and effectively. The jal neti technique is a process of cleansing your nostrils.

To perform the nostril cleanse

  1. Stand above a wash basin or bowl placed on a table.
  2. You need to first take some water, preferably pure water, and mix salt that is devoid of iodine in it.
  3. Take water that is warm and not cold as it needs to enter your nostrils and should not irritate the mucous lining in your nose and throat.
  4. You can see if the temperature is right by putting a few drops on your wrist and feeling the warmth.
  5. The water should not be too hot for the jal neti technique.
  6. One teaspoon of salt will do for half a liter of water. Now insert the cone of the jal neti into your nostril.
  7. Begin with the right nostril and fit the cone in with slight pressure and a few twists.
  8. The cone should be facing upward in line with your nasal passage and not be blocked against its walls.
  9. Next, begin to inhale and exhale through your mouth. You need to be careful not to talk, laugh, or move about while water is being poured through your nose.
  10. Bend your body forward and tilt your head so that your left nostril faces downward.
  11. As you breathe through your mouth and bend your head, the water in the pot will flow out through your left nasal passage.
  12. Allow about half of the water in the pot to flow through and then straighten your body.
  13. Blow your nose gently before repeating the same procedure beginning from your left nostril.
  14. When the water is finished, stand up straight and gently blow off any mucous in your nose.

Jal neti techniques can be quickly mastered on your own and much relief is felt for your blocked sinuses or nose.

How Is Jalneti Helpful As A Mode Of Treatment In Yoga

Jal neti is an extremely useful practice in yoga, especially if you are suffering from sinus related problems, headaches, or a blocked nose. The use of antibiotics and other rhino pharyngeal medication can impair the soft lining of your nose and throat. This is also a reason for the increasing use of jal neti techniques in yoga. This practice irrigates your nasal passage, and cleanses it of any accumulated dirt or toxic material. Yoga nasal cleansing is done to treat the symptoms of sinus inflammations and clear off any blockages that have become quite chronic.

Jala neti yoga benefits are visible in the relief that you experience when your sinus infection subsides. Jal neti clears the bacteria and dirt from your nasal passages. The sinus cavities referred to as “dead end cavities” also get drained. Your body is now tuned to combat any sinus infection, hay fever, and inflammation of the adenoid glands or tonsils. When your nasal passage is cleansed of dirt and mucous, it allows you to breathe freely, and you will no longer tend to breathe through your mouth. By performing jal neti, extra heat in your brain and head is drawn out of your body. This is thus helpful for headaches, migraines, tension headaches, and for hysteria and depression. Your eyes are also benefited by the practice of jal neti nasal cleansing. The tear ducts receive a thorough wash down and thus improve your vision. Middle ear infections or glue ears also clear up when you flush out the toxins from your nasal passages. After a session of jal neti practice, the olfactory nerves are rejuvenated, and you experience a greater sense of smell of your surroundings. The usefulness of the practice of jal neti is also seen in its effect on helping you quit smoking. The nasal hair or cilia are rejuvenated and hence smoke is now considered as a pollutant and your body tries to discard it.

Jal net yoga benefits are seen on practicing the techniques correctly and regularly. This is simple and economical, yet extremely effective.
