I fart a lot
While the use of yoga for gas trouble may sound rather absurd and unconventional there are actual scientific reasons for its effectiveness. So, if you’ve found that practicing yoga has helped relieve you of problems of indigestion and gas you’re probably right. It has become increasingly common in fact for some people to very intentionally use yoga for gas troubles.
Gas or flatus occurs when there is a buildup of gases in the stomach due to consumption of certain foods or swallowing of excess air. It is a common problem faced by a large number of people. The gas is made up of vapors such as hydrogen, carbon dioxide, nitrogen and in some cases, methane. The odor that emanates from the gas is due to bacteria which are present in the colon. The bacteria act upon undigested food and release gases which contain sulfur. There are many natural methods of treating gas buildup. Yoga for gas trouble is known to be beneficial in alleviating the symptoms of flatulence.
Certain carbohydrates such as starches, sugar and fiber are not digested and absorbed by the small intestine due to lack of some enzymes. Therefore these substances are transferred to the large intestine. Here harmless bacteria act upon the food and release gases. This gas is the eliminated from the body through the rectum. Some people also tend to swallow too much air due to eating too fast, chewing gum, smoking or wearing poorly fitted dentures. This swallowed air which contains oxygen, carbon dioxide and nitrogen is released from the body through belching.
Yoga for gas trouble and indigestion involves certain poses that improve blood flow to the digestive system. This allows for proper digestion, thereby preventing buildup of gas. One of the most beneficial yoga poses for gas problems is Vajrasana (Diamond Pose). To perform this pose, sit on the floor with the legs straight. Bend the legs at the knees one at a time and bring them under the hips. The toes of both feet should be touching each other and the knees should be parted to form a V shape. Rest your hips on the heels and place the hands on the knees. Focus on your breathing while you remain in this pose for a few seconds. This pose may be practiced every day after meals for about ten minutes. Yoga for gas relief also includes Pawanmuktasana (Wind Relieving Pose). Lie on your back and bend the left knee. Hold your knee with both hands and bring it close to your abdomen. Hold this position for a few seconds and the repeat with the other leg. Then bend both knees at the same time and repeat the steps. Yoga for gas pain should be practiced regularly for best results. For those with gastric or stomach conditions, it is advisable to seek the advice of a doctor before performing any exercise.
