Yoga For Menorrhagia

(February 3, 2009)

I am suffering from menorrhagia since 5yrs. I have gained weight. Please tell me if I can do 'Kapalbhati', will it adversely affect my reproductive organs ?

Menorrhagia is the excessive, prolonged or heavy periods experienced by some women. You have mentioned that you have been suffering from menorrhagia for the past 5 years. That is an extremely long time and you have not mentioned anything about going to the doctor. You seriously need immediate medical attention. Usually women lose weight when they suffer from menorrhagia but you are gaining weight and that might be due to some other problem so you need to get a medical check up as soon as possible. The symptoms of menorrhagia also include heavy bleeding that soaks up 2 or more sanitary pads in a very short time, bleeding that lasts for more than a week, menstrual flow that includes several large blood clots, continuous pain in your lower back and pelvic region, weakness due to excessive loss of blood, etc. Menorrhagia can be caused due to various reasons such as an imbalance in the hormones, fibroids in the uterus, improper function of the ovaries, polyps, adenomyosis, miscarriage, certain strong medicines, etc. Since this is more commonly caused due to an imbalance in the hormones it occurs in women whose menstrual cycles have just begun or those women whose menstrual cycles are about to stop due to menopause. Do not practice Kapalbhati, as it will put extra pressure on your already weakened system. Kapalbhati involves forceful exhalation and concentrates only on breathing out. This contract the muscles of your abdomen putting pressure on your uterus and this could increase your bleeding.  Please see a gynecologist as soon as you can for your check up and also consult her before starting any kind of exercises. Exercising on your own without consulting your doctor in this case could cause more harm to you.

The safest for you right now would be to practice Dhyana or meditation with some soothing music tracks that are specially meant for meditation. This will help you to relax naturally and completely. After this move on to gentle deep breathing exercises like Anulom Vilom or the alternate nostril breathing. This helps to correct your breathing pattern and improves the flow of oxygen in your body. Thus more amount of oxygen helps the body to rejuvenate naturally. You can also practice Udgeeth or the chanting of Om. Besides this you can practice yoga asanas or postures like Baddha konasana or the restrained angle pose, Supta baddha konasana or the reclining restrained angle pose and Virasana or the hero pose.
